R & P Post 16: My band or artist

Artist name:
-GiGi

Background info:
- Upcoming British pop star from London
-Started singing aged 7; won numerous talent shows
-Incorporates elements of rock music and EDM into her tracks, and draws inspiration from a wide range of artists, from Daya to Boy George.
-Signed to 'Glass Ceiling Records' at age 14

Beliefs/identity:
- She is a staunch feminist, believing in equality and female empowerment
-She also advocates animal rights and opposes animal testing

The name 'GiGi' came from a nickname which is a shortened version of 'Georgina' - who is assuming the role of GiGi. We also felt that it in itself is a snappy and catchy name for an artist. We also felt that whilst it is perhaps more common for an artist to be marketed under their full name, nicknames are still also conventional amongst several pop acts, including Cheryl and Jessie J.

Examples of British female pop artists who used their first name or a nickname

Her music will be from the pop genre, but will be influenced by elements of rock, trap and EDM, as this will appeal to a wider fan base via possible secondary audiences of these other genres. With the growing influence of EDM, we also hope that this will be a springboard for GiGi to gain chart success. In terms of her identity, despite a seemingly rebellious & defiant nature, she aims to use her beliefs, values and role to be a role model for girls to aspire to.

Inspirations:
We have taken many influences and inspirations from a number of artists. I would describe two of our main influences as:

-Demi Lovato:
Demi Lovato has provided an extremely useful reference point when constructing our own artist's persona for a number of reasons. Not only is she stylistically similar with her fashion to the pop-rock image which we were hoping to construct around GiGi, but her image is also one of sincerity and positivity, and she assumes the position of being a good role model having spearheaded many anti-bullying campaigns. This combination of positive individual traits (as opposed to the usual construct which pop stars become according to Richard Dyer's Star Theory), as well as her choice of fashion and her genre are all inspirations which we have used in order to construct out own artist, GiGi.

-Meghan Trainor:
Another influence on our artist has been Meghan Trainor. Despite her genre being slightly lighter, bubblegum-pop than what we had in mind for GiGi, the positive messages throughout her songs, such as female empowerment and being comfortable with your body are traits which we wanted to incorporate through our own artist. Her chart success, also, during a relatively short professional career so far, is another factor which we hoped to transfer to our own artist.
