One source which my ideas have taken inspiration from is Meghan Trainor - in particular her music video for 'All About That Bass', and to an extent 'Dear Future Husband', which I feel both incorporate Goodwin & Mulvey's theories very well, but also provide good inspiration for potential decisions with shot content & cinematography. Please view the case study below for 'All About That Bass'.
Dear Future Husband's use of Dapper Dan-style singers, the housewife role and high saturation reflect an idealistic, 1960s-style feel - matching the retro doo-wop genre. |
"Every inch of you is perfect..." The cutting speed increases to emphasise 'every inch' of the various dancers who are intercut in this particular sequence. |
Using Laura Mulvey's Theory of the Male Gaze:
-In both videos, Trainor isn't dressed overly provocatively, and the camera focuses more on capturing CU beauty shots rather than wider shots of her figure. However, the inclusion of some high angle shots & dancing to accentuate her hips could be seen as still including the theory, though perhaps tailoring it slightly to cater to a younger pop audience, and in order to achieve an appreciation & admiration of female beauty (especially in All About That Bass in expressing the beauty of women with larger figures), as opposed to the usual strategy of many artists to become over-sexualised & objectified.
This will be an extremely important theory for our own group to use, especially given that we have decided upon a female solo artist who we do not want to objectify. Therefore, I believe that Trainor's videos could be a potentially useful reference point in order to achieve this.
