R & P Post 4: Audience groups of interest

Audience plays a pivotal role in the success of artists and bands in the music industry. Their gratifications must be satisfied by tailoring to their specific needs and expectations through their persona and identity (for instance, the image constructed for a more authentic indie band will aim for a different target market to that of an archetypal performance-orientated pop star). In doing so, there is an increased likelihood that these targeted audience groups will in turn bring success to the artist and their record label, in the form of merchandise & EP sales, and concert tickets. Of course, we are aiming to replicate this strategy for our own act in order to maximise their potential success.

In order to analyse the current trends in the UK music industry, we examined Statistika graphs, which demonstrated that pop is the clear favourite genre in the UK, with rock in second. Interestingly, the pop genre was a far clearer favourite amongst the data for music streaming, which could demonstrate a difference in how certain audience members consume music - for example, a typically older adult rock audience may favour buying albums, though this may seem old-fashioned when compared to modern streaming services like Spotify and Apple Music, which may be favoured by a typically younger & more savvy pop audience.

In terms of charts, (at the time of writing) four out of the top ten singles
were from, or featured, female solo artists. There were no female solo artists
on the albums charts, with acts such as Airbourne & Bruce Springsteen reflecting
the prevalence of a rock-based tendency to buy music in the form of an album.

Overall, I can deduce that there is a potential USP as a female synthpop solo artist - especially if our artist intertwined rock elements with mainstream pop or synthpop, as this could potentially appeal to secondary audience of fans of the rock genre.
