R & P Post 3: Music genres that interest me

Alternative & Indie Rock
(clockwise, from top left) bands of interest in the
indie/alternative rock genre: Foals, The Strokes,
Stereophonics, Kasabian, Everything Everything,
Kaiser Chiefs, The Maccabees, Doves

Glastonbury Festival lineup. Highlighted
are all indie & alternative rock acts. Many
others are new wave or pop rock, such as
New Order & Newton Faulkner.
Although I personally enjoy listening to many genres, I am particularly interested in the alternative and indie rock genres. A large number of tracks are reflective and easy-listening - especially the arguably softer, more melancholy indie sound. It is generally agreed that indie is "Anglophilic" and more reflective of British culture, which could explain the popularity gained by indie bands in the UK, like Bastille - and retained by those such as Kasabian. The fact that these genres remain popular today could be a potential factor in choosing our act - and this is evidenced by the large number of acts playing at festivals such as Reading, Leeds and Glastonbury despite the assertion of some that rock is dead.

(Please click to enlarge) I have produced a general timeline of the progression of alternative & indie rock.

Big Beat/Electronica
(clockwise from top left) Massive Attack, Fatboy Slim,
Basement Jaxx, Chemical Brothers

I am also a fan of electronic music in general, listening to tracks from the Big Beat and Trip Hop sub-genres. Electronic music today influences a variety of tracks and has a huge range of sub-genres: EDM, techno, acid house and breakbeat amongst them.

Having suggested which genres we were personally interested in as a group, we listed potential genres we could then utilise for our own project. The pop and synthpop genres seemed to suit us, as it seemed to be a good compromise to similar genres of electronica, EDM and general pop - which we had all expressed our individual, personal interest in.
